My soon to be ex-wife and I were going to file a dissolution. Now she says she wants to hire a lawyer and file for alimony. Someone told me you have to be married for at least five years in Ohio to claim this. We have only been married for four. Anyone know anything about this?

Does majority of people really support alimony laws?
I immigrated to US from East Europe long ago and was very much amazed to learn about the alimony laws.
In California every two years of marriage result in one year of alimony and after 10 years of marriage alimony is for life. Provided that it was no prenuptial agreement and the other party didn't remarry.
"Official" explanation is that the less wealthy party gets accustomed to the certain lifestyle that's why more wealthy party has to provide it.
This explanation doesn't make sense to me. Following this logic if I work for the company and get good pay and good lifestyle as a result of this company should pay me even after I quit since I am accustomed to this lifestyle.
Every time I ask friends they say something like this: well, this was one of the achievements of the feminist movement in 1970s and 80s....
But why such laws exist today?
Does majority of people really understand and support them?
